Bayern Munich has officially named Max Eberl as the club’s new board member for sport. The 50-year-old, previously associated with Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig, has inked a contract with Bayern extending until the summer of 2027.
Eberl is set to assume his new role at Bayern starting March 1. His primary responsibility will involve selecting the successor to Thomas Tuchel, following the announcement of Tuchel’s impending departure from Bayern at the end of the season.
Eberl said: “I spent my entire childhood and youth at FC Bayern and in Munich, so it is something special for me to now return to the club where it all began in a new role. The job as sports director is a big challenge that I will tackle with a lot of respect and humility but with even more anticipation.
“Together with everyone here, I would like to do everything I can to ensure that FC Bayern continues to be successful in the future and bring joy to its fans.”
Eberl’s journey in football began with Bayern Munich’s youth teams, where he progressed as a player and even made a solitary appearance for the club’s first team in 1991. Subsequently, he went on to play for VfL Bochum, Greuther Furth, and Borussia Monchengladbach before retiring from professional football in 2005.
Following his retirement, Eberl transitioned into a managerial role, initially serving as Borussia Monchengladbach’s academy manager in 2005. After three years in this position, he ascended to the role of sporting director in 2008.
During his tenure at Borussia Monchengladbach, Eberl oversaw significant signings such as Marco Reus from Rot Weiss Ahlen in 2009 and Granit Xhaka from FC Basel in 2012.
In 2022, after 14 years with Borussia Monchengladbach, Eberl assumed a similar role at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. His tenure there was highlighted by winning the German Super Cup, where RB Leipzig triumphed over Bayern Munich with a 3-0 victory in August 2023. However, Eberl departed RB Leipzig in September 2023.
Now, Eberl returns to Bayern Munich as their new board member for sport. The club, currently trailing Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen by eight points, is gearing up for their upcoming fixture against SC Freiburg on Friday.
