Borussia Dortmund faced a setback with a 3-2 loss at home against Hoffenheim on Sunday, as Maximilian Beier’s second-half brace jeopardized the hosts’ hold on fourth place in the Bundesliga.
Despite the defeat, Dortmund remains on 41 points, just one ahead of RB Leipzig in fifth position, and six points behind third-placed VfB Stuttgart. The latter played to a 1-1 draw at home against Cologne on Saturday.
Hoffenheim took an early lead in the second minute when Ihlas Bebou capitalized on a defensive error from Dortmund, finding the net from a tight angle. However, Dortmund managed to equalize in the 21st minute through Donyell Malen’s close-range volley, following a corner flicked on by Marco Reus.
Nico Schlotterbeck extended Dortmund’s lead to 2-1 four minutes later with a towering header off a free kick. However, Hoffenheim fought back, with Maximilian Beier leveling the score in the 61st minute with a deflected shot from the edge of the box. Beier then secured his brace three minutes later with a tap-in, giving Hoffenheim the lead once again.
Despite Dortmund captain Emre Can’s late effort for an equalizer, his close-range header missed the target, resulting in Dortmund’s first defeat in 2024.
Following the victory, Hoffenheim sits in seventh place with 30 points from 23 games.
