Ahead of their highly anticipated Champions League Round of 16 clash against Napoli, Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez avoided crowning any favorites despite the recent coaching change in the Napoli camp.
“Returning to the Round of 16 is a source of hope for us, and we’re aiming to reach the next stage,” Xavi declared at a press conference. “We need to execute our game plan effectively tomorrow, as we have the potential to perform exceptionally.”
The Napoli side has experienced a turbulent week, with Walter Mazzarri’s unexpected dismissal leading to the appointment of Francesco Calzona as their third manager this season. Adding to the complexity, Calzona will concurrently manage the Slovakia national team until the end of the season.
“Napoli’s coaching change was certainly surprising,” Xavi admitted. “While their reasons are justified, it creates challenges for us in terms of preparation. We must demonstrate our character and excel in both attacking and defensive aspects, acknowledging the quality of the reigning Italian champions.”
He highlighted the attacking prowess of Napoli’s key players, stating, “Matteo Politano, Victor Osimhen, and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia form a formidable strike force. They are elite players.”
Napoli’s unpredictable tactical approach, often switching between a three-man defense and a 4-3-3 formation, adds to the intrigue. “Both Barcelona and Napoli have had irregular seasons, winning their respective league titles but facing inconsistencies. This encounter is a true 50-50 battle, with no clear favorites.”
“Our analysis focuses on Napoli’s playing style,” Xavi explained. “While they often utilized a five-man defense under Mazzarri, Calzona’s preference for a four-man backline doesn’t significantly alter our approach. Our primary objective is to dominate the match regardless of the opponent’s coach.”
With his own departure from Barcelona confirmed at the end of the season, Xavi emphasized the team’s focus on the tournament. “We don’t play to silence critics; we play for the fans and those who believe in the club’s success. Tomorrow’s focus is not on external criticism or perceived injustices, but on the Round of 16, a stage we haven’t reached in two years. We must embrace this opportunity and showcase our competitive spirit.”
Acknowledging Barcelona’s defensive struggles in La Liga, conceding 34 goals in 25 games, Xavi stressed the importance of solidity. “Defending effectively against Napoli is crucial. We must prevent Politano, Osimhen, and Kvaratskhelia from causing damage in transition, as they possess the ability to decide the outcome.”
Recognizing the home advantage in the second leg, Xavi outlined a cautious approach. “We need to be slightly more cautious, aiming to defend with possession. We anticipate Napoli adopting the same strategy, especially under a new coach. This will be a complex match.”
He concluded by reiterating Barcelona’s winning mentality. “I would never consider a draw a positive outcome. As Barcelona, we are always obligated to strive for victory.”
