Reports suggest that English winger Jadon Sancho’s stay at Borussia Dortmund will likely not extend beyond his current loan spell from Manchester United.
Sancho joined Dortmund on loan in January after failing to impress new United manager Erik ten Hag, featuring in only three matches at the start of the season. A controversial social media post in September, since deleted, reportedly contributed to ten Hag excluding him from the first-team squad.
With his loan expiring at the end of the season, it appears Dortmund won’t be taking up the option to sign Sancho permanently. While rumors suggested the Bundesliga club wanted him back, recent reports indicate otherwise.
This news comes a year and a half after Manchester United acquired Sancho from Dortmund for a hefty £73 million fee. While he scored 12 goals in 82 appearances, including 7 in his first season under then-manager Erik ten Hag, he failed to consistently meet expectations. This led to his loan move back to Dortmund in January, where he has contributed 2 assists in 5 appearances but is yet to score.
Initial excitement surrounding Sancho’s arrival at United has faded, replaced by questions about his ability to fit into Ten Hag’s system and deliver on his potential. Whether he returns to Manchester and attempts to regain his place or seeks a permanent move elsewhere remains to be seen.
