In the current season of the Bundesliga, the performance of Bayern Munich in wrestling for dominance is noteworthy, yet the revenue generated from the Champions League by the Bavarian club is exceptionally commendable.
Bayern Munich consistently accumulates staggering amounts season after season, and this one is no exception.
According to Sky Sports, Bayern has amassed over 100 million euros in revenue from the Champions League. Their income stems from a combination of 86 million euros in prize money from UEFA and 25 million euros from television broadcasting rights and matchday revenues. Bayern stands to earn even more, with 12.5 million euros allocated for each team reaching the semifinals, 15.5 million euros for the runners-up, and 20 million euros for the champions of the most prestigious continental tournament.
During the recent summer transfer window, Bayern’s leadership made the decisive move to acquire Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur for an initial fee of 95 million euros (according to Transfermarkt).
Many view this acquisition not only as a move to replace Robert Lewandowski, the striker who departed in the summer of 2022, but also as an effort to finalize the puzzle of a team expected to clinch the treble. However, this aspiration seems to have deviated from their plans, as issues with squad depth have posed challenges for the team in the first half of the season, compounded by Thomas Tuchel’s overall inability to command the dressing room at the Allianz Arena.
While hopes of achieving the treble have completely dissipated with Bayer Leverkusen poised to clinch the domestic league title and Bayern’s elimination from the DFB-Pokal in a disappointing manner against third-tier Saarbrucken, the Champions League remains the avenue through which the Bavarian outfit could secure silverware this season.
If Bayern were to win the UEFA Champions League, they would earn a total of 143.5 million euros. This calculation excludes potential additional earnings from broadcasting rights and matchday revenues. Moreover, Bayern could receive further bonuses from Adidas based on jersey sales, as stipulated in their contract. This amount would increase substantially if they progress and secure another traditional cup victory.
However, what are the chances of Bayern winning the Champions League? The Bavarian representatives have surged back strongly in March with consecutive emphatic victories, but no one can guarantee that this run of form will continue until the end of the current season. The first challenge will be two difficult matches against Arsenal, and if they overcome that, even greater obstacles will await to thwart Bayern’s quest for glory.
Assuming Bayern were to secure the aforementioned 143.5 million euros, would they continue to reinvest all their earnings in the transfer market? Yet, with the recuperation of funds from the Harry Kane deal solely from the Champions League, we must still admire the financial acumen of Jan-Christian Dreesen and his associates.
