Liverpool have identified Ruben Amorim and Julian Nagelsmann as potential targets if their top choice, Xabi Alonso, opts not to move to Anfield.
The Reds expressed their interest in Alonso early on, considering his successful tenure at Bayer Leverkusen, where he has overseen an unbeaten season in the Bundesliga.
However, reports from The Telegraph suggest that Liverpool are exploring alternative options to Alonso, who appears closer to a move to Bayern Munich than to succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
Ruben Amorim, the current manager of Sporting CP, and Julian Nagelsmann, the head coach of the German national team, have emerged as potential alternatives to Alonso.
Amorim, aged 39, has less than five years of managerial experience, all within Portugal. However, he notably led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years, surpassing the dominance of Benfica and Porto in the Portuguese league.
Julian Nagelsmann, the current head coach of the German national team, has also been included in Liverpool’s managerial shortlist.
Nagelsmann was dismissed from his role at Bayern Munich in March 2023 but swiftly transitioned to take charge of the German national team following the departure of Hansi Flick.
Jurgen Klopp announced his departure from Liverpool in January, citing a depletion of energy after achieving nearly every possible trophy. Klopp emphasized that his departure would mark a break from managerial duties and clarified that he had no intentions of coaching another English team besides Liverpool.
With Klopp’s departure confirmed, Liverpool began the search for his successor, quickly identifying Xabi Alonso as a top candidate.
Alonso, currently managing Bayer Leverkusen, is poised to guide the club to their first-ever Bundesliga title. However, there is speculation that he could be enticed to remain in Germany and potentially succeed Thomas Tuchel at his next destination following his departure at the end of the season.
