West Ham coaches have expressed their astonishment at the underwhelming performances of Kalvin Phillips, who is currently on loan from Manchester City. They have observed a noticeable decline in his commitment and enthusiasm towards playing in the Premier League.
Phillips joined West Ham on loan in January after a disappointing spell at Manchester City, where he failed to make a significant impact following his £45m transfer from Leeds in 2022.
During his time at Manchester City, the midfielder only managed to make 31 appearances, which resulted in him losing his place in the England squad due to a lack of playing time and subpar performances when given the opportunity.
Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, even raised concerns about Phillips’ fitness, stating that he was overweight on two separate occasions.
Hoping for a fresh start, Phillips sought refuge with David Moyes’ team at the beginning of the year. However, things have not improved for him since then. He has only started three games since joining West Ham and was substituted at halftime in the most recent match against Burnley.
His lowest point came in the 4-3 defeat to Newcastle, where he was brought on to stabilize the team’s performance when West Ham was leading 3-1 with 20 minutes remaining.
According to sources within West Ham, it is being suggested that Phillips is no longer motivated to play in the Premier League. The coaching staff is surprised by his lack of commitment during training sessions and behind-the-scenes.
The report further states that not only has the midfielder failed to perform well in matches, but he has also been extremely disappointing in training ever since his arrival from Manchester City in January. In fact, his poor performance has shocked the West Ham coaches.
