Inter, currently boasting the best defensive record among clubs across Europe’s top five divisions, are evidently seeking a successor to Yann Sommer in the goalkeeping position. Reports suggest their interest extends to three potential candidates, two of whom have been visited by Samir Handanovic in recent weeks.
Handanovic, who retired from professional football at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season after an eleven-year tenure at San Siro, has assumed the role of goalkeeping scout for Inter since the winter of 2023.
The former Nerazzurri captain was present at Monza’s 4-1 home defeat to Daniele De Rossi’s Inter, accompanied by familiar figures such as Walter Samuel and Vincenzo Montella.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Handanovic’s attendance aimed at a closer assessment of Monza’s goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, who has also drawn attention from Juventus, as per separate sources.
Di Gregorio’s market value is currently estimated to be around €20 million, according to information from Calciomercato.com. Initially joining Monza on loan from Inter, the deal was later formalized for approximately €4.15 million in 2022.
Should Inter pursue the return of Di Gregorio to San Siro, they may consider offering one of their young talents in exchange to potentially mitigate the cost, as indicated in reports from Saturday, which suggest Gaetano Oristanio as a potential candidate.
However, Di Gregorio is not the sole goalkeeper under Handanovic’s scrutiny.
In February, Inter’s former primary goalkeeper journeyed to Belgium to observe Tobe Leyson of Standard Liege in a match against OH Leuven.
Additionally, reports suggest Inter are monitoring Brazilian goalkeeper Bento from Atletico Paranaense, with a speculated transfer fee of €15 million if Inter decide to pursue his acquisition.
