Vinicius Junior became visibly emotional as he addressed the racism he has endured in certain Spanish stadiums. The Brazilian forward featured in Brazil’s victory over England at Wembley Stadium and is set to play against Spain at the renowned Bernabeu.
Prior to this match, the Real Madrid star, speaking about the abhorrent racism he has faced in La Liga, was moved to tears during a press conference. Despite attempts to discuss the issue, the 23-year-old struggled to contain his emotions, expressing his sadness and lack of support in facing verbal racism not only in Spain but worldwide.
During his pre-match press conference, he told reporters: “Verbal racism happens not only in Spain, but also throughout the world. Every day I go home I feel sadder. Nobody is supporting me.
“Sorry, I just want to play football, do everything for my club and my family.”
Vinicius Jr added: “With each complaint I feel worse, but I have to appear here and show my face. I have asked for help from UEFA, FIFA, Conmebol and CBF, which are large groups and can fight against that.”
Referencing legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, the Brazilian said: “Now I understand more about racism, I have studied it, that is why I speak with such propriety. Muhammad Ali was an example, and I am here to speak on behalf of Brazilians. Because many defend me in this.”
Vinicius Jr has been the subject of vile taunts during his time at Real, but he has never thought about leaving the club to escape the racist abuse.
“I have never thought about leaving Spain, because that would be giving the racists what they want. I’m not going to leave the best club in the world,” he said defiantly. “The racists are a minority; I’m going to remain firm and strong because the president and the club support me.”
Vinicius Jr is enjoying another prolific campaign following his heroics last season.
