Luton Town has increased their interest in Blackburn’s in-form striker Sam Szmodics. The Hatters are eyeing the Championship’s leading goal scorer, aged 28, regardless of their league status, but Brentford is also in the race.
Following Saturday’s thrilling victory over Bournemouth, Rob Edwards’ team is currently in the relegation zone based on goal difference.
However, this gap could widen to three points if Nottingham Forest defeats Tottenham on Sunday. Szmodics has netted 23 league goals for Rovers this season, in addition to six goals in the FA Cup. Despite not finding the net in Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Southampton, he maintains a three-goal lead over his closest competitor, Adam Armstrong, in the goal-scoring charts.
His impressive performances led to his first call-up to the national team last month, where he earned his first two caps for the Republic of Ireland. Szmodics qualified to represent the Boys in Green through his grandmother, although he was also eligible to play for England and Hungary.
With two years left on his current contract with Blackburn, he also has the option of extending for another season after renewing his deal in September. Rovers acquired the striker from Peterborough in the summer of 2022.
