Tottenham Hotspur may seek to rectify a decision made during the tenure of former manager Mauricio Pochettino when the upcoming transfer window commences later this year. Pochettino oversaw the departure of Marcus Edwards from Spurs, and there are indications that the club is contemplating reacquiring the forward during the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to reports from A Bola, Tottenham is among the Premier League clubs closely monitoring Marcus Edwards’ situation at Portuguese club Sporting CP. While Sporting would ideally retain Edwards, who is contractually tied to Lisbon until the summer of 2026, they are open to the possibility of selling him during the off-season.
However, Sporting would only entertain offers meeting Edwards’ valuation, which was previously reported to include a release clause of £52 million. Recent reports from the Portuguese outlet suggest that offers around the £20 million range might now be considered. This represents a significant reduction from the initial valuation, with rival Premier League club Crystal Palace also expressing interest.
Regardless of the financial implications for Tottenham in securing the services of the 25-year-old forward, it is anticipated to be a costly endeavor. Edwards, a native of London, emerged from Tottenham’s youth academy but made only one senior appearance for the club, in an EFL Cup third-round match against Gillingham in 2016.
During his time in Tottenham’s academy, Edwards garnered considerable attention, with Pochettino even drawing comparisons between him and the likes of Lionel Messi. Pochettino remarked in 2016 on Edwards’ potential, urging patience and guidance in nurturing his talent.
However, Edwards departed English football in the summer of 2019, signing with Primeira Liga club Vitoria de Guimaraes. Following a successful stint in Portugal, he subsequently moved to Sporting in January 2022, amassing 46 goal contributions in 104 appearances for the club.
