Atletico Madrid managed to withstand a late Borussia Dortmund comeback to maintain a slight advantage following the initial leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Diego Simeone’s team had a strong start at Estadio Metropolitano, with Rodrigo de Paul scoring in the fourth minute after intercepting Ian Maatsen’s errant pass.
The visitors appeared shaky early on, but Samuel Lino capitalized on another defensive error to score Atletico’s second goal.
Dortmund showed improvement towards the end of the first half and after the break, with Gregor Kobel making a crucial save to prevent Lino from scoring a second. Despite Dortmund’s late resurgence, Atletico held on to their lead.
The match saw a thrilling finish, with Dortmund coming close to equalizing through Sebastien Haller and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens hitting the crossbar. Atletico’s defense, led by Mats Hummels, managed to keep Dortmund at bay.
With a narrow lead secured, Atletico will head into the second leg at Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion next Tuesday with confidence.
