In a significant setback for Newcastle United, Sven Botman is expected to be out of action for six to nine months due to an ACL injury, as confirmed by the club.
The 23-year-old defender, who is integral to Eddie Howe’s team, will miss the rest of the 2023-24 season, dealing a heavy blow to the team’s defensive lineup.
Botman’s injury occurred during Newcastle’s recent FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, where he played for 83 minutes. Having started the last 10 Premier League matches post-recovery from a previous knee injury, this new injury marks a prolonged absence from the pitch.
The club announced on X, the platform previously known as Twitter, that Botman will undergo surgery following a scan that confirmed the ACL injury. The post read: “Sven Botman will undergo surgery next week after suffering a knee injury against Manchester City. A scan has confirmed that he sustained an injury to his ACL and he is expected to return within 6-9 months. We wish you a full and speedy recovery, Sven.”
After an impressive fourth-place finish in the previous Premier League season under Howe’s leadership, Newcastle has found the current season more challenging. Currently positioned 10th in the league, the team is 16 points adrift of the top four, with only 10 games remaining.
Newcastle is set to resume play on March 30 following the international break, hosting West Ham at St James’ Park. The absence of Botman will undoubtedly be felt as the team navigates the remainder of the season.
