Chelsea are currently in negotiations to secure a transfer agreement that would see the talented Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao join their ranks at Stamford Bridge for the upcoming summer season.
The objective is to find a suitable replacement for a winger who has failed to meet the expectations of Mauricio Pochettino. Williams, who played a crucial role in Athletic’s triumph in the Copa del Rey, ending their 40-year trophy drought, possesses a release clause worth £43m with his current club.
His impressive performances throughout the season have caught the attention of both Arsenal and Tottenham.
The winger, who agreed to a fresh contract at San Mames in December, has recorded six goals and 14 assists in 30 appearances across all competitions this season. This places him among the top ten Under 21 goal contributors in Europe’s top five leagues. Additionally, he has scored two goals in 13 matches for the Spanish national team.
Given that Chelsea will not be participating in the Champions League for the 2024-25 season, it may prove challenging for them to attract a player of such high standing, especially considering interest from other clubs.
However, according to Football Insider, the Blues are aiming to gain an advantage over their competitors by attempting to secure a deal for the 21-year-old before the transfer window opens. This is part of their strategy to strengthen their attacking options this summer.
Although Chelsea already have Mykhaylo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, and Raheem Sterling operating on the wings, Williams could potentially serve as a direct replacement for Sterling, who has faced difficulties during his time at Stamford Bridge.
