Salernitana’s dire season took another turn for the worse after a 2-0 home defeat to Monza, leaving the club’s director Maurizio Milan feeling “let down by the squad.”
Following the dismissals of Paulo Sousa and Pippo Inzaghi, the arrival of Fabio Liverani as the third manager this season was meant to spark a turnaround. However, this hope was quickly dashed with a 4-0 loss to league leaders Inter on Liverani’s debut and another defeat at the hands of mid-table Monza.
“We are all very disappointed,” Milan stated on DAZN after the match. “We expected a stronger reaction, especially in the opening minutes, but they were sluggish.”
Despite early efforts from Guillermo Ochoa and Milan Djuric, Salernitana found themselves behind in the closing stages to goals from Daniel Maldini and Matteo Pessina. This latest setback leaves them stranded at the bottom of the Serie A table, facing a near-impossible task to avoid relegation with only two wins, seven draws, and 17 defeats.
The fans echoed the directors’ sentiment, jeering the players off the pitch and chanting “Shame on you!”
“The root cause lies with the players on the pitch,” Milan continued, acknowledging responsibility across the team. “We made mistakes, tried to rectify them, but the disappointment is immense.”
While acknowledging the season is not officially over, Milan emphasized the need for improvement. “The reaction from the squad was not what we expected. We will make that clear to the coach and players.”
Discussions regarding a potential training retreat are ongoing, but even club officials are starting to lose hope.
“We have the resources to turn this around, or at least play with pride, which we didn’t do tonight,” Milan stated. “The president is deeply disappointed by the players, their promises, and the agents who painted a different picture. Bitterness and disappointment are the overriding emotions.”
With only 13 points from 26 games and seven points adrift of safety, Salernitana faces a monumental challenge to salvage their Serie A status.
