Real Madrid has officially petitioned to reschedule their last La Liga match of the season to accommodate a Taylor Swift concert at the Bernabeu.
As it stands, Los Blancos are slated to face Real Betis at home on Sunday, May 24, marking the culmination of the 2023/24 league campaign. However, Swift’s performance for The Eras Tour is scheduled at the Bernabeu just a few days later, on Thursday, May 30.
According to The Athletic, Madrid aims to play against Betis on Saturday, May 23, allowing additional time for the venue’s preparation. Yet, the success of this request hinges on the potential stakes for both clubs as the season nears its end.
Currently leading the La Liga standings by six points over Girona, Madrid eyes the league title, while Betis aims for European qualification, adding intrigue to the decision.
In the spirit of fair play, Real Madrid’s requested rescheduling would align with simultaneous kick-off times for their title contenders, such as Girona, assuming they are still in contention. Similarly, Real Betis would adhere to this principle with other teams vying for European qualification spots.
Real Madrid is also seeking an additional date for a second Taylor Swift concert due to overwhelming interest. Notably, renowned musicians like Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones have previously graced the newly renovated Bernabeu stadium with performances.
Taylor Swift’s tour extends beyond Madrid, with concerts planned at several football stadiums this summer, including Anfield and Wembley in England, as well as national stadiums in Ireland and Sweden.
Concerns have arisen regarding a scheduled performance at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium in June, as the club was previously at risk of competing in the Ligue 1 relegation-promotion playoff. However, Lyon’s recent string of victories has alleviated concerns, positioning the seven-time French champions comfortably in tenth place.
Real Madrid aims to continue their pursuit of reclaiming the La Liga title when they face Sevilla on Sunday night, a match that will see the return of former club captain Sergio Ramos.
