Sergio Rico, the goalkeeper for Paris Saint-Germain, has received medical clearance to resume his football career after a harrowing incident that endangered his life almost a year ago.
The 30-year-old Spaniard was involved in a distressing accident on May 28, 2023, when he was struck by a mule cart and a runaway horse during a pilgrimage in his native Andalusia. As a result, Rico suffered severe injuries to his head and neck.
Despite the challenges he faced, the former Sevilla star has now been given the green light to return to the sport he loves.
Rico’s relatives stated during the occurrence that Sergio Rico embarked on a journey from Strasbourg to Malaga the previous night, and from there to El Rocio, with the club’s consent following PSG’s victory in Ligue 1.
After spending a little over ninety minutes with his loved ones and companions, he was en route to the Pontifical Mass near the chapel when he encountered an unfortunate incident involving a mule cart and a horse that had escaped its reins.
Rico experienced a 26-day period of being in a coma, during which he spent 36 days in intensive care.
Additionally, he underwent a surgical procedure to treat the injuries and brain trauma he had endured. In July 2023, he was released from intensive care, and a month later, he was discharged from the hospital.
