Italian media has recently criticized Victor Osimhen subsequent to Napoli’s 3-1 defeat against Barcelona on Tuesday. Nonetheless, Alessandro Del Piero, a prominent figure in Juventus and Italian football, perceives the performance of the Nigerian international in a more favorable light, describing it as exhibiting a “positive attitude” against the formidable La Liga opponents.
Osimhen’s display during Napoli’s Champions League loss to Barcelona on Tuesday failed to meet expectations, resulting in the Partenopei’s exit from the prestigious European competition.
Although expressing disappointment with the striker’s performance, Del Piero chose to defend him post-match. In an interview with Sky Sport Italia, the 2006 Italy World Cup winner remarked, “He put in maximum commitment even if being flagged offside so many times is a little bit excessive.” Del Piero further asserted, “Of course, when you play badly in an important match, you are a little down, but the player’s qualities can’t be questioned. Napoli have had a negative season, so you don’t always face what happens with a smile. However, Osimhen’s attitude was always positive.”
Throughout the season, Osimhen has demonstrated his prowess by netting 13 goals in 24 appearances across various competitions, including one in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against Barcelona two weeks ago.
Despite recently extending his contract with Napoli until June 2026, Osimhen is anticipated to depart in the summer, with a €130 million buyout clause looming.
Del Piero, renowned for his illustrious career which includes triumphs in the Champions League and the World Cup, holds the record for the most goals and appearances in Juventus’ history. He bid farewell to the Old Lady in 2012 following their first Scudetto victory in the post-Calciopoli era.
