In spite of the absence of evidence indicating a decline in performance, Gullit posits that due to Salah’s advancing age, a move from Liverpool to PSG could result in success. PSG has dominated Ligue 1, claiming the title nine times in the last 11 years.
Gullit expressed this viewpoint during beIN SPORT’s Champions League coverage on Tuesday. The discussion arose as PSG secured their place in the quarter-finals of the competition, amidst increasing speculation regarding the departure of their star player Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid this summer.
During the discussion, host Richard Keys suggested the possibility of Salah being a high-value replacement, asserting confidently, “we know he is leaving [Liverpool].” Notably, Salah’s contract with Liverpool expires in 2025, raising the prospect of losing him for free if not resolved by next winter. Gullit displayed skepticism towards this proposition and was prompted to elaborate on his stance.
In response to Keys’ inquiry, “Why did you dismiss the idea of Salah so quickly?” Gullit bluntly stated, “Because he’s old!”
Keys attempted to counter this argument by referencing the transfer of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich at the age of 31 for £90 million. Gullit maintained his position, citing his own experience of arriving in England at a similar age and emphasizing the physical demands on strikers.
His fellow pundits, Andy Gray and Didier Domi, suggested that the lower intensity of the French league could prolong Salah’s career. Gullit disagreed, asserting that the pressure to perform at PSG would be comparable to that at Liverpool.
While Salah’s performance has defied Gullit’s expectations, the sentiment expressed by the Dutch legend may resonate with Liverpool fans, who value Salah as their primary attacking asset. Therefore, despite potential offers from clubs like PSG or teams in the Saudi Pro League, fans would prefer Salah to remain at Liverpool, although acknowledging his ability to maintain his performance level elsewhere.
