Newcastle United is making plans to acquire two central defenders in the upcoming transfer window due to unforeseen circumstances.
The team’s original summer plan has been completely changed as a result of serious injuries to Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman, both of whom have suffered anterior cruciate ligament ruptures and will be sidelined for several months.
Lascelles sustained his injury during the win over West Ham on Saturday, leading to his withdrawal from the match. It has been confirmed that he will be out of action for a period of six to nine months.
On the other hand, Botman recently underwent surgery for a knee injury that he initially suffered in October 2023, and he will also be absent for a similar duration.
Although Newcastle had already intended to sign a new defender, the injuries have prompted them to now seek two new additions during the off-season. The team, led by Eddie Howe and their recruitment staff, has made it a priority to secure a left-sided defender this summer.
For the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign, Dan Burn is expected to step in and play a central role in Newcastle’s defense. Burn initially joined the club as a left-back but will now be deployed in the heart of the defense. Fabian Schar, who recently signed a contract extension until 2025, is the likely candidate to partner with Burn, while Paul Dummett, who has seen limited playing time this season, is the only other fit center-back available.
Despite the setbacks, Newcastle currently sits in eighth place in the Premier League and is just one point away from potential European qualification. With nine games remaining in the season, the team will continue to push for a strong finish.
