Newcastle United has reignited their interest in Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale as they consider a potential summer transfer.
Ramsdale, who desires regular playing time in the Premier League, has found himself in an understudy role since David Raya’s arrival from Brentford. As Ramsdale evaluates his options, Newcastle has emerged as one of the interested parties, aiming to bolster their squad.
Currently, Newcastle’s number one goalkeeper is Martin Dubravka, but Nick Pope is expected to return from a dislocated shoulder at the end of April. However, Dubravka is 35 years old, while Pope will turn 32 this month. Therefore, Newcastle is seeking a younger option as they plan for the future of their recruitment.
Manager Eddie Howe holds a high regard for Ramsdale, having previously signed him at Bournemouth from Sheffield United. Howe also provided Ramsdale with a second chance after he missed the bus for a Carabao Cup tie against Chelsea due to oversleeping.
Ramsdale was fined and subsequently sent on loan to AFC Wimbledon, but he credits Howe for managing the situation well, describing it as a pivotal moment in his career.
After being bought back by Sheffield United for £18.5 million, Ramsdale was later sold to Arsenal in 2021 for £30 million. Despite Ramsdale’s impressive first season, Mikel Arteta brought in David Raya from Brentford to increase competition and enhance distribution, which has proven successful as Arsenal competes for the title once again.
With Ramsdale preparing for a potential move, Arsenal has also been considering Columbus Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte, along with interest from clubs like Manchester United, for the upcoming summer transfer window.
The final decision may hinge on the asking price for Ramsdale, but Newcastle has expressed their interest and will actively seek to strengthen their goalkeeping position in the market.
