Liverpool missed out on the opportunity to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League after being held to a draw in an exciting match against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Manager Jurgen Klopp and his team will be left wondering how they couldn’t avenge their loss in the FA Cup quarter-finals last month, as they dominated the game for long periods but failed to convert their numerous chances into goals.
Despite their dominance, Liverpool only managed to score one goal through Luis Diaz in the first half, while United failed to register a single shot on target. United’s manager Erik ten Hag was grateful for Liverpool’s wastefulness and the saves made by their goalkeeper Andre Onana.
In a surprising turn of events, United were given a lifeline five minutes into the second half when Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah made a costly mistake, passing the ball straight to Bruno Fernandes who scored from inside the centre circle.
Kobbie Mainoo then put United ahead with a brilliant curling finish in the 67th minute, marking his first home goal at the Stretford End. However, Liverpool managed to salvage a draw, which was the least they deserved, when Mohamed Salah converted a penalty in the final six minutes of normal time after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s late challenge on Harvey Elliott.
As a result, Liverpool now sit in second place behind Arsenal on goal difference, with Manchester City trailing by a point in third position.
