In a recent interview with Spanish media outlet Diario AS, Ivan Helguera, a former Real Madrid player, discussed the potential signings of Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland by the club.
According to Helguera, Mbappé’s versatility would make him a better fit for Los Blancos in comparison to Haaland. Helguera’s constructive insights provide valuable information to the Real Madrid management, helping them make an informed decision on which player to sign.
“They are both very good, but I think Mbappé is more valid for Madrid,” Helguera said (h/t Bernabeu Digital). “He can play on the wing, as a center forward, and even as a midfielder if you want. “Not Haaland. He’s a center forward, and that’s it.”
“Mbappé is easier to adapt to because of his way of playing, dribbling, he shows himself much more without the ball, to make a wall, if you have to play outside the area with him… All of that is easier for him than for Haaland, who is much more of a goal-scorer from the area. That’s why I think he’s more valid for Madrid, but they’re both a spectacle.”
Helguera also delved into the dynamics of how Mbappé’s potential arrival might affect Real Madrid’s overall team structure. He expressed confidence that the addition of the French superstar wouldn’t disrupt the team’s balance, provided that Mbappé aligns with the tactical demands of the squad.
However, Helguera emphasized a crucial aspect of Mbappé’s game that he believes needs improvement: defensive commitment. While Mbappé is renowned for his attacking prowess and blistering pace, there have been instances in his career where defensive responsibilities have been questioned.
As Mbappé prepares for a potential move to Real Madrid, Helguera highlighted the significance of adapting to the defensive requirements expected at the club. This adaptation could play a pivotal role in how seamlessly Mbappé integrates into Real Madrid’s system and contributes to the team’s overall success on the field.
