Martin Zubimendi, a target for Arsenal, has addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding his potential departure from Real Sociedad this summer.
The 24-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a standout season in La Liga, playing a pivotal role in Real Sociedad’s quest to secure Champions League qualification for the upcoming season.
With five games remaining, Real Sociedad needs to secure nine points to solidify their position, and Zubimendi’s contributions have earned him widespread acclaim.
Barcelona boss Xavi compared him to legendary midfielder Sergio Busquets back in January, stating (quotes via Sportskeeda): “He is more physical and faster than Busi, who is better technically. But it’s not just Zubimendi, it’s all the players in [Sociedad’s] midfield.”
The Spaniard, who made his senior international debut in 2021 and won a silver medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, was linked with moves to Arsenal and Barcelona in January, due to the presence of a £52.8 million release clause in his Sociedad deal.
However, neither move materialised, with the Gunners sealing the signing of Jorginho from Chelsea on transfer deadline day.
Speaking about why he turned down a move to the Emirates Stadium, Zubimendi told Spanish outlet Sport: “Rumours, rumours, because I told my manager that I didn’t want to hear anything, especially in winter.
“Leaving Real Sociedad aside with the season we are having would be illogical. Here, I am very happy.”
Now, with the summer transfer window on the horizon, Zubimendi has once again responded to speculation.
Zubimendi on Arsenal move
Speaking to MARCA about his future, he stated: “I have never said that I want to leave Real. I have not even considered leaving.
“I have already said it several times, to say it more times it seems that they do not pay attention to me.
“I think I’m enjoying it a lot this season. I’m very happy here, with my life, with the club’s appreciation and continuing to meet the club’s goals and my own, I think it’s the best I can do.”
