Manchester United has reportedly set a transfer fee of €50 million (£42.7m) for Mason Greenwood, a player targeted by Barcelona, as indicated by sources in Spain. Greenwood, who has been on loan to Getafe in La Liga for the season, was allowed to depart from Old Trafford during the final moments of last summer’s transfer window, a decision made by Manchester United.
Since his arrest in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, controlling behavior, and assault, the 22-year-old has not featured in any matches for Manchester United. Although all charges against him were dropped last February, his return to the club sparked significant controversy.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, one of Manchester United’s new co-owners, has suggested the possibility of Greenwood’s reinstatement, indicating that a new decision regarding his future with the club is pending.
Recent discussions between Manchester United’s football director, John Murtough, and head of director of football negotiations, Matt Hargreaves, with Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, and two CAA Base agents, Frank Tramboli and Fede Massai, took place in Barcelona. These discussions suggest Barcelona’s interest in Greenwood as a potential signing for the upcoming summer transfer window.
Reports suggest that Manchester United is open to selling Greenwood but will require a transfer fee of €50 million (£42.7m). Additionally, the club has not ruled out the possibility of extending Greenwood’s loan spell at Getafe, despite his current contract expiring at the end of the following season.
Greenwood, on the other hand, reportedly desires to play for a Champions League-contending club, although he would also welcome the opportunity for another season at Getafe due to the positive rapport he has established with the club.
During his time at Getafe in La Liga this season, Greenwood has emerged as one of the standout performers, having contributed six goals and five assists thus far.
