Manchester City is reportedly investigating the possibility of acquiring Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes during the upcoming summer transfer window. The 26-year-old Brazilian was among the initial acquisitions made by Newcastle’s ownership backed by Saudi interests in January 2022, joining the club from Lyon for a reported fee of £40 million. Since then, he has established himself as a favorite among the fans at St James’ Park.
Guimaraes has become a key figure in Eddie Howe’s squad, having made a total of 95 appearances for Newcastle across various competitions, during which he has scored 13 goals and provided 12 assists while primarily operating as a deep-lying midfielder.
Despite having over four years remaining on his contract with Newcastle, Guimaraes has been linked with a potential high-value transfer this summer due to the financial challenges facing the club. Newcastle reported pre-tax losses of £73 million for the current financial year, prompting CEO Darren Eales to acknowledge the possibility of selling some of their top players to facilitate squad reinvestment and adhere to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Guimaraes has reportedly attracted interest from several prominent European clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Chelsea. According to reports from FootballTransfers, Manchester City, who recently secured a treble victory, are the latest club to express interest in recruiting Guimaraes for the upcoming season.
Sources suggest that Manchester City holds significant interest in the Brazilian midfielder as they seek to bolster their midfield options for the forthcoming campaign. Potential suitors for Guimaraes would need to meet his £100 million release clause stipulated in his contract with Newcastle.
Manchester City’s interest in Guimaraes could intensify should they opt to part ways with Kalvin Phillips permanently. Phillips is currently on loan at West Ham United after being deemed surplus to requirements under Pep Guardiola’s management.
Additionally, Manchester City has been linked with other midfield targets, including Lucas Paqueta from West Ham United and Joshua Kimmich from Bayern Munich. Kimmich, however, has expressed a calm demeanor regarding his future at Bayern Munich, despite having less than 18 months remaining on his contract.
