Manchester City has reportedly opted to defer discussions regarding contract negotiations with prominent forward Phil Foden until the summer. The academy product hailing from Stockport is currently experiencing his most prolific season whilst donning the Citizens’ shirt, having amassed 18 goals and 10 assists in 41 appearances across various competitions.
At a youthful age of 23, Foden has already accumulated a total of 258 senior appearances for Manchester City since his debut in November 2017, netting 78 goals and contributing 51 assists.
This versatile attacker has secured 16 trophies at the club level, which includes five Premier League titles and one Champions League. Furthermore, he was part of the City squad that clinched a historic treble in the previous season.
Foden notably showcased his prowess in Manchester City’s 3-1 derby victory over Manchester United earlier this month, where he netted two goals. Post-match, manager Pep Guardiola hailed him as the Premier League’s premier player.
In October 2022, Foden prolonged his Manchester City contract until the summer of 2027, purportedly tripling his wages to approximately £200,000 per week.
Recent reports suggest that Manchester City is contemplating initiating negotiations with the forward for a new contract. Nevertheless, as per Football Insider, the club is not expected to progress with talks until the conclusion of the current campaign.
It is believed that all concerned parties are optimistic about reaching a fresh agreement for a long-term deal in the upcoming summer.
Foden, who harbors affection for his childhood club, has acknowledged thriving in a more central role under Guardiola’s tutelage this season.
“I’ve been playing in a new position as well – more inside and more midfield and I’m enjoying it,” Foden conveyed to mancity.com. “I’m enjoying the season and I’m in good form at the moment, so I want to keep that up. Sometimes it just clicks and happens – you get a run of games, there’s nothing more to it.”
“This freedom has allowed me to pick up the ball more and be more involved. I’ve relished every moment I play there,” he further articulated.
While Foden refrains from labeling himself as “world class” yet, he acknowledges his potential and the significance of manager commendations. “I still want to keep improving and try to be an even better player. To do it for a number of years – that’s when you get the world-class status. I have to do it consistently in the biggest games and biggest occasions.”
As the season progresses, Foden aspires to culminate it triumphantly as Manchester City pursues another treble. Moreover, he is eager to leave an imprint on the international stage with England at Euro 2024 this summer.
