Manchester United have been in contact with Melvin Bard, a defender from Nice, as they prioritize signing a new left-back this summer. Bard, who is 23 years old, is being discussed as one of the club’s targets to strengthen their squad.
He is currently playing under the ownership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS in France. Bard, known for his attacking abilities on the left side, has performed exceptionally well in Ligue 1 this season and is aiming for a call-up to the French national team for Euro 2024.
A move to Old Trafford would benefit both INEOS-affiliated clubs. Bard’s current contract has only two years remaining, and negotiations are expected to take place in the coming months for a new and improved deal.
Manchester United initially explored options for a right-back in January but now believe that signing a left-back is more crucial due to the injury problems faced by Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia this season.
On the right side, Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have impressed in recent weeks. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is making significant progress in his summer plans. After recruiting sporting director Dan Ashworth from Newcastle, who is currently on gardening leave until 2025, the club is set to bring in Jason Wilcox as his deputy from Southampton.
Wilcox has already started his 12-month gardening leave, and although Manchester United is expected to pay a substantial sum, it will be much less than what it would take to release Ashworth from his contract before the summer transfer window.
In addition to a left-back, Manchester United also wants to sign a forward who can play alongside the improving Rasmus Hojlund, a center-back, and a midfielder.
Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise, who grew up supporting United, is among the attackers being considered. Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite are additional options for the defense. There is also a possibility of selling players such as Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Antony, Raphael Varane, and Casemiro.
