Manchester United is said to have engaged in discussions with Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong. The Dutch player played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s recent Bundesliga title victory, securing a 5-0 win against Werder Bremen.
Frimpong has been featured in 24 out of 28 Bundesliga matches this season, scoring eight goals and providing eight assists. His impressive performance has led to a total of 12 goals and 11 assists in 38 competitive games.
As a result of his standout displays for Xabi Alonso’s team, the 23-year-old has attracted interest from several top Premier League clubs.
Frimpong, the Leverkusen full-back, has attracted interest from local rivals Man United and Manchester City, as well as Liverpool. Journalist Christian Falk reports that Man United has engaged in concrete discussions with Frimpong’s representatives regarding a potential summer transfer.
Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have also made contact with the player’s management, with the latter expressing their interest in the talented defender. Despite being under contract until June 2028, Frimpong possesses a €40m (£34m) release clause that can be triggered before the commencement of Euro 2024 in June.
It appears that Manchester United is actively seeking to add a new defender to their squad in order to create competition for their first-choice right-back, Diogo Dalot. The 25-year-old player, who has also been utilized as a left-back, has started in 29 out of 32 Premier League matches for Man United this season, contributing with one goal and three assists.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who currently serves as Dalot’s backup, has faced difficulties due to injuries throughout the season and there is a possibility that he may be allowed to depart from the club during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Frimpong, on the other hand, would bring a stronger attacking threat compared to Wan-Bissaka, as he has predominantly played as a wing-back during Leverkusen’s successful title-winning campaign. Nevertheless, Frimpong has previously demonstrated his ability to operate in a slightly deeper role as a traditional full-back.
