Familiar faces sparked nostalgic joy at Chase Stadium on Wednesday night as Luis Suárez and Lionel Messi, reunited legends of FC Barcelona, orchestrated a winning start for Inter Miami CF in their 2024 MLS season opener.
Joining forces as the final piece of Miami’s “Big Four” alongside fellow Barça alumni Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, Suárez provided an assist in his debut, setting up Diego Gómez for the decisive goal in an 83rd-minute victory over Real Salt Lake.
“Winning at home is really important,” Suárez expressed to MLS Season Pass, emphasizing the significance of the victory and the enduring camaraderie with his former teammates. “We’re still friends on and off the pitch, and we always try our best to help the team.”
While individual accolades remain a possibility, Suárez’s focus lies with collective success. “Coming to a team that just won the Leagues Cup and aiming for the MLS Cup, which the club hasn’t achieved yet, is the biggest ambition and challenge for me and the entire team,” he declared.
Despite glimpses of their renowned chemistry, coach Gerardo Martino recognizes the need for further refinement. “More time is needed for both to reach peak form,” he explained. “They know each other well, but they have to rediscover that partnership that worked so well at Barcelona.”
Miami’s sky-high expectations are matched by the scrutiny they face as title contenders. Suárez acknowledged this from the outset, stating, “It’s natural for all teams to want to compete and beat you, especially because we can fight for the title. They know our ambition.”
While the magic of Suárez and Messi is undeniable, Inter Miami’s journey to MLS glory remains a work in progress. Their ability to translate individual brilliance into collective success will determine their ultimate impact on the league.
