Manchester City and Arsenal supporters would have been filled with joy witnessing Liverpool’s unexpected 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace in their Premier League encounter on Sunday.
The atmosphere at Anfield turned somber as Palace secured a remarkable away victory, adding to Jurgen Klopp and his team’s already dismal week after their disappointing performance in the UEFA Champions League earlier.
Liverpool’s aspirations for the Premier League title took a significant hit when they were defeated 1-0 by Crystal Palace at Anfield. The team missed out on the opportunity to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League, with Eberechi Eze’s goal in the first half securing a crucial win for the visitors and pushing them eight points ahead of the relegation zone.
Palace had failed to win in their previous 13 encounters with Liverpool in the Premier League. However, they made a promising start at Anfield and managed to take the lead in the 14th minute. Tyrick Mitchell provided a well-placed pass for Eze, who was unmarked and successfully slotted the ball past Alisson.
Just four minutes later, the Eagles came close to doubling their lead when Virgil van Dijk slipped, allowing Jean-Philippe Mateta to break free towards the goal. However, Andrew Robertson made a magnificent clearance off the line to deny them.
Liverpool attempted to respond, with Wataru Endo hitting the crossbar and Luis Diaz’s acrobatic volley being saved by Dean Henderson. Henderson also did a commendable job blocking a powerful strike from Darwin Nunez after the halftime break.
In the second half, the Reds dominated the game but struggled to find the equalizer. Nathaniel Clyne and Mitchell made crucial interventions to deny Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah on the goal line.
Additionally, Curtis Jones missed a golden opportunity as the destiny of the Premier League title slipped away from Liverpool’s grasp.
