Leeds United is considering bringing back Kalvin Phillips this summer, however, the Manchester City midfielder will have to accept a significant reduction in salary to rejoin Elland Road.
Phillips, who moved to City for £50 million in 2022, has only started six games for the club and is currently on loan at West Ham.
Despite hopes of regaining form for Euro 2024, Phillips has struggled to impress at West Ham, even showing frustration towards fans after a recent match. City is reportedly willing to sell him for around £25 million, and Leeds is one of the clubs interested in signing him, pending their promotion to the Premier League.
Daniel Farke’s team is currently in second place in the Championship, but there may be a hurdle when it comes to signing Phillips. He is currently earning £150,000 per week at City, while Leeds’ top earner, Patrick Bamford, earns less than half of that.
The club’s leaders are also hesitant to disrupt their current salary structure for Phillips, and it remains uncertain whether he would be willing to accept a significant pay cut to return to Elland Road. Additionally, Newcastle has shown interest in the midfielder.
Although West Ham cannot make Phillips’ loan move permanent this summer, manager David Moyes remains optimistic that he will regain his top form. “Kalvin is a human being and, like all of us, he has his ups and downs,” Moyes stated.
