Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has announced that he intends to postpone making a decision regarding Joao Cancelo until the conclusion of the season.
Cancelo has been absent from City’s lineup since January 2023 due to a disagreement with Guardiola. Subsequently, he was loaned out to Bayern Munich and then to Barcelona.
However, Cancelo has faced severe backlash for his notable mistakes in the losses against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and Real Madrid in La Liga.
Guardiola mentioned during a press conference that the future of Cancelo at the club will be determined at the end of the season.
Cancelo experienced three significant incidents during his tenure at City. Upon his arrival from Juventus in 2019, the Portuguese player considered leaving the club due to Guardiola’s preference for Kyle Walker as the right-back.
In 2020, Sporting director Txiki Begiristain intervened to encourage Cancelo to participate more actively in training sessions.
By late 2022, Cancelo was observed not paying attention during team meetings and was reportedly listening to music on his headphones while Guardiola was addressing the team.
Cancelo’s contract with City is valid until 2027, as he signed a lucrative agreement in 2022, almost a year before being loaned out to Bayern.
His loan spell with Barcelona will expire at the conclusion of this season, but he has expressed his intention to stay at the Catalan club for an additional two or three years.
