Barcelona has initiated inquiries into the potential acquisition of Luis Diaz, as reported by a source within the player’s native territory. The discussion transpired during a meeting between the representative of Diaz and the club president, Joan Laporta.
According to Colombia’s El Heraldo, Carlos Van-Strahalen, the agent of Diaz, convened with Laporta for a formal dinner last week to explore the feasibility of a forthcoming agreement.
Diaz, aged 27, has been subject to persistent transfer speculations concerning a potential move to Camp Nou, tracing back to his tenure at Porto. Recent conjectures suggest that he might emerge as a prominent departure from Anfield this upcoming summer, particularly amid the restructuring following Jurgen Klopp’s departure.
Having transferred to Liverpool from Porto in 2022 for a sum of £37.5 million, Diaz has accumulated a tally of 22 goals across 85 appearances for the Reds. His current campaign sees him register 11 goals from 38 matches, maintaining a near-constant presence on the left flank amidst the arduous fixture schedule as Liverpool contends on multiple fronts. Nonetheless, Diaz has encountered criticism from certain quarters regarding his perceived lack of composure in front of goal.
It is unfeasible: Barcelona denied in bid for Diaz
The purported summit between representatives of Barcelona and the agent of Diaz failed to produce a satisfactory outcome for the Catalans. They were informed that Liverpool has set a valuation ranging between €120m (£102m) and €140m (£120m) for the acquisition of the No. 7 player.
Upon being presented with these figures, Laporta, the Barcelona president, reportedly deemed them unfeasible. This response underscores the challenges faced by Barcelona, given their limited resources and the recurrence of financial difficulties within the club.
Although Diaz is contracted to Anfield until 2027, reports suggest that Liverpool may consider his departure if a bid meets their stipulated valuation. However, skepticism surrounds the veracity of the claims made by El Heraldo.
It appears improbable that Liverpool would sanction the sale of Diaz, or any key first-team player, without first establishing new leadership within the organization. The club is currently without a manager, and the appointment of a new sporting director is also pending, following the departure of Jorg Schmadtke in January.
Michael Edwards is anticipated to return to Liverpool in a senior management capacity, while Richard Hughes, formerly of Bournemouth, is rumored to be in line for the role of sporting director.
Since joining Liverpool, Diaz has contributed to the team’s success, notably winning two Carabao Cups and an FA Cup. He also featured in the 2022 Champions League final, where Liverpool faced defeat against Real Madrid.
