Henrik Larsson is a Celtic legend who had a brief but memorable stay at Manchester United.
The Swedish icon had a successful career in Europe, playing for Feyenoord and Barcelona, and becoming a fan favourite at Celtic during his seven-year spell.
Larsson, 52, won the Champions League with the Spanish giants, setting up both goals in their 2-1 victory over Arsenal. He left that summer to join his childhood club Helsingborgs in Sweden at the age of 34.
It seemed like a perfect way to end his brilliant career, but there was one more twist for the former striker. He made a surprising move to Manchester United on a short-term loan in January 2007.
He only played 13 games and scored three goals for the Red Devils, who wanted to keep him longer. But he decided to leave in March, before they clinched the Premier League title.
He was only there for three months, but he made lasting impressions thanks to Sir Alex Ferguson. The manager generously let him go to Sweden for a family event after a match. Larsson told The Guardian: “When I joined Manchester United, my brother Kim had a christening for one of his boys.”
“I asked Sir Alex if it was possible. He arranged a private jet for me to get home after a game. I was only there for 10 weeks but he made me feel so welcome.”
Larsson said that he turned down Sir Alex’s offer to join the Premier League team when he was at his peak. He wanted to build a lasting reputation at Parkhead instead of leaving in his prime.
