In the quarter-final first leg at Emirates Stadium, Harry Kane made a triumphant return to north London, scoring a goal that left Arsenal’s Champions League hopes uncertain.
The Arsenal supporters, not surprisingly, greeted Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer with hostility. However, it was Arsenal who took an early lead through Bukayo Saka’s well-placed finish after just 12 minutes.
Despite their struggles in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich turned the tide of the game before halftime, with former Arsenal player Serge Gnabry finding the back of the net to equalize six minutes later.
Kane’s moment came in the 32nd minute when Leroy Sane was brought down by William Saliba at the end of a rapid run. Stepping up to take the resulting penalty, the England captain silenced the taunts with his 15th goal in 20 appearances against Arsenal.
Although Mikel Arteta’s side did not display their usual fluidity, substitute Leandro Trossard capitalized on Gabriel Jesus’ exceptional work to level the score.
In the dying seconds of stoppage time, Arsenal believed they should have been awarded a penalty, but their appeals were dismissed by the referee when Saka went down under a challenge from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
The Gunners were perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty earlier in the half when Gabriel handled the ball after the referee had signaled for a goal-kick.
At the time, several Bayern players protested, but their appeals were swiftly rejected by the referee.
