Gareth Southgate has indicated the potential return of Luke Shaw to competitive play this season, following previous assertions by Erik ten Hag that the Manchester United defender would be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign. Shaw has been absent from matches since sustaining a muscular injury during Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Luton last month. Ten Hag’s remarks on March 8 suggested that Shaw, alongside fellow left-back Tyrell Malacia, who is recovering from a knee injury, would be unavailable for the remainder of the season.
Ten Hag remarked, “We’re confronted with significant frustrations. While the absence of a player in one position may be acceptable, the unavailability of two players throughout the season proves to be profoundly frustrating.”
However, subsequent to naming his England squad for upcoming international friendlies against Brazil and Belgium later this month, Southgate has disclosed the possibility of Shaw’s return prior to the conclusion of the campaign. The England manager is optimistic about Shaw’s full recovery in time for Euro 2024, commencing in mid-June.
During a press conference, Southgate stated, “We, along with Manchester United, are hopeful that he could make a return just before the conclusion of the league season. Nonetheless, this timeframe is becoming increasingly constrained in relation to the Euros, and one must acknowledge the feasibility of participating in seven matches during the tournament.”
He further elaborated, “Drawing from our experiences in previous tournaments involving seven matches, we have garnered valuable insights into the physical demands of such competitions. Hence, the emphasis lies not only on regaining fitness but also on assessing the subsequent impact on performance. Shaw, owing to his caliber and the depth of talent in his position, holds significant importance to us. However, it remains a matter requiring close attention.”
Shaw’s injury is not the sole setback for the England squad ahead of the March fixtures, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Marc Guehi, Reece James, and Jack Grealish among those unavailable for selection. Nonetheless, Southgate remains optimistic, highlighting the opportunities presented for other players to assert their claims within the squad.
“In recent weeks, we have observed a succession of injuries, akin to issues faced by certain clubs presently,” Southgate remarked. “Although beyond our control, such circumstances necessitate adaptability and prudent decision-making. Moreover, they afford opportunities for alternative squad members to showcase their capabilities, and thus, we maintain a positive outlook amidst these challenges.”
