Luis Rubiales was promptly released shortly after being apprehended upon his arrival in Madrid from the Dominican Republic.
He is under suspicion of receiving illicit commissions during the negotiation of a lucrative agreement to host the Spanish Super Cup competition in Saudi Arabia.
Prosecutors are currently seeking a jail sentence of two and a half years. Despite these allegations, Mr. Rubiales firmly denies any involvement in any unlawful activities.
pon disembarking the aircraft, he was escorted into a black van alongside several members of the Civil Guard. However, he was promptly released thereafter. According to Spanish public broadcaster RTVE, it is anticipated that Mr. Rubiales may have to appear in court on Thursday.
It is worth noting that Mr. Rubiales was in the Dominican Republic at the time when law enforcement officials conducted a search of his residence last month.
Furthermore, they also conducted searches at the football federation headquarters and made multiple arrests. In a separate matter, Mr. Rubiales is scheduled to stand trial for sexual assault due to an incident where he kissed player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth following last summer’s World Cup final. Ms. Hermoso and her teammates have expressed that the kiss was unwelcome and demeaning.
Consequently, Mr. Rubiales was compelled to resign from his position, although he maintains his innocence and denies any wrongdoing.
