Manchester United is making preparations for a future without Erik ten Hag, indicating that Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi is the leading candidate on their list of potential managers.
The pressure on Ten Hag has increased following the Red Devils’ narrow victory over Championship side Coventry, who almost staged a remarkable comeback from 3-0 down in the FA Cup.
Although Manchester United emerged victorious in the semi-final through a penalty shootout, it is understood that Sir Jim Ratcliffe remains unconvinced by the Dutch coach and his management of the team this season.
De Zerbi is highly regarded by Ratcliffe and his recruitment team, with recent updates suggesting that Brighton are preparing for his potential departure.
Brighton’s Italian coach has achieved remarkable success at the Amex Stadium, leading the Seagulls to secure European football for the first time in their history last season.
Nevertheless, Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that Brighton is considering the possibility of appointing Burnley manager Vincent Kompany as a replacement for De Zerbi.
According to Tavolieri, Brighton have reportedly had preliminary discussions with Kompany’s representatives as they prepare for De Zerbi’s departure. Kompany, who led Burnley to victory in the Championship last season, has akêyttracted interest from several top clubs.
Despite the attention, he chose to stay at Burnley but has struggled to steer the team away from the relegation zone. Currently second-bottom in the Premier League, Burnley’s chances of avoiding relegation are slim. While Kompany is focused on finishing the season strongly with Burnley, he may consider a Premier League opportunity if the team is relegated.
This development could potentially benefit Man Utd’s pursuit of De Zerbi, should they decide to part ways with Ten Hag at the end of the season. However, it is important to note that Chelsea is also interested in De Zerbi and may make a move for him if Mauricio Pochettino is sacked.
Chelsea is willing to give Pochettino a fair chance to succeed, and the club’s performance for the remainder of the season will determine his future.
