Barcelona president Joan Laporta has expressed his refusal to dismiss the possibility of pursuing legal action regarding Lamine Yamal’s controversial goal against Real Madrid. The incident occurred when the teenager believed he had scored, putting Barcelona ahead 3-2 at the Bernabeu.
However, Real keeper Andriy Lunin managed to prevent the goal, despite claims from the visitors that the ball had crossed the line.
With no goalline technology in La Liga, the referee’s decision stood. Laporta mentioned that the club will be seeking the audio and video evidence from the Technical Refereeing Committee at the Spanish FA to investigate the situation further.
If it is determined that an error was made, Laporta stated that Barcelona will take necessary actions to rectify the situation, including potential legal recourse.
He mentioned that if their analysis verifies it was a legitimate goal, the team does not rule out the possibility of requesting a replay of the game, similar to what occurred in another European match due to a VAR error.
A complete replay of a Belgian Pro League match between Anderlecht and Genk took place as a result of a VAR error.
Following Luis Diaz’s wrongly disallowed goal earlier this season, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp advocated for a replay of their Premier League match against Tottenham.
“We acknowledge the challenges faced by officials, which is precisely why tools like VAR exist to promote fairness in competition,” stated Laporta, emphasizing the importance of such technologies.
Xavi, the Barcelona manager, expressed his discontent with the absence of goalline technology in La Liga, despite its implementation in other countries like the Premier League in England. Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen described this situation as “shameful for football.”
