Barcelona is preparing to bid farewell to Marcos Alonso as his contract nears its end this summer, according to recent reports.
Despite signing an 18-month deal in January 2023 with the option for an extension, the 33-year-old’s playing time has been limited this season due to a back injury and tough competition within the team.
The rise of Alejandro Balde and the presence of loanee Joao Cancelo have restricted Alonso to just 299 minutes on the field across seven matches in various competitions.
Sources indicate that Barcelona has decided to part ways with the versatile player at the end of the current season, despite his significant contributions last season when he played in 37 matches in different positions.
While there is speculation about his next destination, particularly Atletico Madrid, no official announcement has been made about his future. Reports from Cadena SER suggest a potential agreement between Alonso and Atletico Madrid, although details are yet to be confirmed.
Alonso’s football journey in Spain has been diverse, starting in Real Madrid’s academy before moving to Barcelona. A move to Atletico Madrid would complete his experience with each of Spain’s top three clubs. Alongside Alonso’s potential departure, Sergi Roberto’s future with Barcelona is also uncertain as his contract is nearing its end.
The 32-year-old’s fate seems to be linked with that of manager Xavi Hernandez, whose future at Barcelona is unclear beyond the current season. As the summer transfer window approaches, Barcelona faces crucial decisions regarding its squad, with Alonso and Roberto at the forefront of discussions.
