The LA Galaxy has kicked off the 2024 MLS season with a promising performance, largely attributed to the contributions of their two new Designated Players, Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil. Paintsil, in particular, has made a remarkable entrance, netting two goals and providing an assist in his initial four appearances for the Galaxy. This sparks the question: could there be room on the roster for yet another marquee player?
The backdrop to this speculation is Neymar’s surprising transfer last summer from PSG to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, a deal valued at around €90 million. However, Neymar’s tenure at Al Hilal was abruptly interrupted by injury before he could make a significant impact.
In October 2023, Neymar faced every footballer’s nightmare when he sustained a severe injury to his left knee, tearing the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus while playing for the Brazilian national team. This injury not only sidelined him but also cast doubt on his future with Al-Hilal, as there have been various reports suggesting that the club is contemplating terminating his contract.
Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano weighed in on the situation, stating: “Al Hilal has not terminated Neymar Jr.’s contract. These rumors have been refuted and are considered to be baseless.”
Amidst this uncertainty, there’s a growing buzz that Neymar could be a potential signing for the LA Galaxy. It’s not the first time that Neymar’s camp has quickly dismissed rumors as “fake news,” only for the events to unfold as initially reported, such as his unexpected exit from PSG.
The French sports newspaper L’Équipe has reported that the LA Galaxy is showing interest in the Brazilian superstar. Neymar’s precarious contract situation with Al Hilal could be the driving force behind a possible move to Major League Soccer.
At present, the LA Galaxy’s roster includes three Designated Players: Riqui Puig, Gabriel Pec, and Joseph Paintsil. However, there’s speculation that the MLS may soon revise its rules to permit up to four Designated Players per team. If this change comes to fruition, it could potentially create an opportunity for Neymar to join the Galaxy, adding another high-profile name to their squad and undoubtedly elevating the team’s profile in the league and internationally.
