Atalanta director Luca Percassi has refuted the narrative presented by both Juventus and Liverpool target Teun Koopmeiners, asserting that the player never expressed a desire to be transferred. Amidst heightened speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future in the transfer market, it is widely anticipated that he will join one of the premier clubs worldwide by the conclusion of the current season.
Juventus and Liverpool appear to be frontrunners in the pursuit of Koopmeiners, particularly following statements made by the Dutchman to De Telegraaf, wherein he indicated his intention to seek a transfer in the upcoming summer window. Koopmeiners expressed his hope for potential options to consider, emphasizing his desire for Atalanta to secure a favorable deal. He cited previous interest from Napoli, though no agreement was reached between the clubs.
These revelations came as a surprise to Atalanta and its general manager Percassi, who offered a contrasting perspective on the matter. Percassi affirmed the stability of the club, stating that Atalanta is not compelled to sell its assets. He clarified that Koopmeiners has not been sold to Juventus or any other club, further noting that the player had not formally requested a transfer.
Koopmeiners, aged 26, was acquired from AZ Alkmaar for €14 million in the summer of 2021 and has since demonstrated notable progress during his tenure in Bergamo. His significant contributions, comprising 12 goals and four assists across 34 competitive appearances for Atalanta this season, have bolstered his market value, which now stands at a minimum of €50 million. Additionally, his contractual commitment extends until June 2027.
