Aston Villa’s belief in Unai Emery’s long-term commitment to the club contrasts with recent reports suggesting his potential candidacy for the managerial vacancy at Bayern Munich, where Thomas Tuchel is set to depart at the end of the season.
Emery, widely regarded as one of Europe’s premier coaches, has garnered admiration from Bayern circles since his Villarreal side knocked the Bundesliga giants out of the Champions League quarter-finals two years ago. Although Emery has been mentioned among the possible successors for Tuchel, Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso is reportedly the preferred choice at this stage of Bayern’s search. Alonso, a former Bayern player, has guided Leverkusen to the top of the table this season, holding an eight-point lead over Bayern.
Despite the speculation surrounding Emery’s future, Aston Villa remains steadfast in their belief that the Spaniard is committed to their long-term project. However, the allure of Bayern Munich and the potential opportunity to lead one of Europe’s elite clubs may present a tempting prospect for Emery as the managerial carousel continues to turn.
At present, sources indicate that Bayern Munich has not initiated any contact with Aston Villa regarding Unai Emery. However, Villa was well aware upon appointing Emery that he would inevitably attract attention from top clubs across Europe.
The 52-year-old manager boasts an impressive resume, having secured 11 trophies and achieved success in Spain, France, and England. Despite operating with limited financial resources compared to the Premier League’s affluent powerhouses, Emery has steered Villa to fourth place in the league standings.
The club’s structure has been tailored to accommodate Emery, with the manager having allies in crucial roles and enjoying the support of co-owner Nassef Sawiris, who took it upon himself to secure Emery’s appointment following Gerrard’s departure.
Emery’s sole focus at present is on ensuring Villa qualify for Europe for a second consecutive season.
They in the Champions League places as things stand, and face Nottingham Forest at home on Saturday. Next month they will resume Europa Conference League action at the last 16 stage, and will learn their opponents on Friday.
Meanwhile, on-loan midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo is unlikely to remain at the club beyond this season.
The Italian was borrowed from Galatasaray last summer but has not started a game for more than two months and is poised to return to Serie A on another loan deal.
