Javier Tebas, the president of LaLiga, has suggested that Barcelona can adhere to the league’s spending cap by offloading “two or three of their top-class players” to other clubs. This statement comes after LaLiga reduced Barcelona’s annual spending limit by €66 million, resulting in a decrease from €270 million to €204 million.
Barcelona currently faces a significant financial challenge, with their squad costs reportedly exceeding €400 million, more than double the limit imposed by LaLiga. This presents a substantial obstacle for the club in terms of signing and registering players during the upcoming summer transfer window.
When questioned about the possibility of Barcelona following a similar path to Ajax, a club renowned for developing talented players but struggling to retain them due to financial constraints, Tebas dismissed the notion, asserting that Barcelona will overcome their current situation. He expressed confidence in the club’s ability to navigate through these challenges and emerge successfully.
“They have two or three top-class players they can sell. If they sell them, then they can solve a great part of their program. With that, they can generate income that doesn’t generate debt interest and can pay players.”
