In October 2023, the Hamas terrorist organization attacked Israel, causing widespread chaos and death. The southern Israeli city of Niz Or was one of the areas hardest hit.
In the midst of the violence, an incredible story unfolded involving a 90-year-old woman named Ester Cunio. Cunio, an Argentine-born Israeli citizen, was living in Niz Or with her family when the Hamas attack occurred. She and eight of her family members were kidnapped by Hamas militants.
Cunio, who speaks Spanish and Argentinian but not Hebrew or English, was able to communicate with one of the kidnappers who spoke Spanish. When she told him that she was from Argentina, the kidnapper asked if she knew Messi, the famous Argentine football player. Cunio replied that she did, and that she was from the same city as Messi.
The kidnapper’s demeanor changed completely after hearing Messi’s name. He lowered his gun, gave it to Cunio, and asked to take a picture with her. Cunio was then released, but her family members remained in captivity.
Cunio’s story is a remarkable tale of survival and the power of sport to bridge divides. She told her story in a Spanish documentary called “Voces del 7 de Octubre” (Voices of October 7th), which commemorates the Hamas attack.
The story of Ester Cunio is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. It is also a testament to the power of sport to unite people and bring joy.
