One of the prominent challenges faced by Manchester United over the past decade pertains to their lack of success in navigating the transfer market effectively. Whether procuring or offloading players, the club has consistently encountered difficulties, irrespective of the individuals overseeing operations, be it managerial staff or board members.
An exemplar organization from which Manchester United could glean valuable insights is Real Madrid. Thierry Henry expressed admiration for Real Madrid’s adept handling of superstar departures, citing instances such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Casemiro, and Raphael Varane, even when such decisions might appear counterintuitive.
Henry suggested that Raphael Varane’s transfer from Real Madrid to Manchester United was influenced, in part, by a knee issue, as conveyed during an interview with CBS Sports on Paramount+ (March 6, 2024, 7:15 pm). Prior to his injury setbacks, Varane had earned acclaim as one of the premier centre-backs globally. However, prolonged spells in the treatment room had a detrimental effect on his performance, resulting in a loss of pace.
Nonetheless, Manchester United proceeded to secure Varane’s services for £41 million in 2021, with Casemiro joining the following season for £70 million. The acquisition of the Brazilian midfielder at the age of 30 raised eyebrows among observers due to the substantial transfer fee involved.
Thierry Henry reiterated his admiration for Real Madrid’s strategy of parting ways with iconic figures before their decline becomes apparent, showcasing a shrewd approach to player transitions.
Raphael Varane and Casemiro transfers to Manchester United
“The one thing they do ever-so-well is they know when to get rid of players,” said Henry. “I am not talking about the players that are logical to get rid of.
“I am talking about it was time for Ronaldo. It was time for Casemiro. It was time for Ozil. It was time for Varane, which was more of a knee issue if I understand well.
“But if you think about those three – Modric, Kroos and Casemiro. They sold the youngest one. Why would you sell the youngest one?
“Well, they notified that those two can help the Valverde, the Tchouameni, Camavinga and they do that ever-so-well and you have to give them credit because when you get rid of the players that I mentioned before, they were outstanding players at that time for your team.”
Real Madrid are building another superstar team
According to reports obtained by HITC Football, it has been indicated that Kylian Mbappe, though not yet officially confirmed, is anticipated to join Real Madrid in the near future, adding further depth to an already dynamic team. The inclusion of the French prodigy is expected to bolster the prowess of the Madrid squad, potentially leading to increased dominance in their performances.
Real Madrid boasts a rich history of European conquests, and the prospective addition of Mbappe suggests a continuation of their legacy. It is speculated that not even a formidable opponent such as the Treble-winning Manchester City will impede their trajectory.
The manner in which Real Madrid conducts their transfer affairs serves as a benchmark for other European clubs, showcasing a determination and efficacy in securing desired players, irrespective of the competitive nature of the process.
