Danny Rohl elucidated the rationale behind Sheffield Wednesday’s decision to cease their pursuit of Nico Schulz.
Rohl’s affiliations with the Germany national team, as well as his past associations with RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich, were widely recognized within the confines of Hillsborough.
Nonetheless, the revelation of former Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schulz training at Middlewood Road with the senior team last month came as a surprise. Schulz, aged 30, had previously plied his trade in Germany with Hertha Berlin, Borussia Monchengladbach, Hoffenheim, and Dortmund, garnering appearances for the national team under Rohl’s management.
The 34-year-old coach had expressed interest in acquiring Schulz on a free transfer, indicating a willingness to explore possibilities as the player continued training with the Championship outfit.
However, Sheffield Wednesday faced backlash over the potential acquisition, given the defender’s legal troubles, having been charged with three counts of Grievous Bodily Harm against a former partner. The Wednesday Women’s Supporters Group penned an open letter to Rohl, imploring him to reconsider the signing of Schulz.
Subsequently, the Owls manager announced that Schulz would not be returning to Sheffield, elucidating the reasons behind the decision. Addressing The Star following the victory over Plymouth last night, Rohl stated, “I typically refrain from discussing absent players after a match, but I have arrived at a final verdict… I’ve consistently emphasized considering the broader context in transfer matters, and this case was no exception.”
“I’m very happy with my team here, I know Kristian Pedersen will come back soon, and that’s the reason why I will stay with my squad… Nico Schulz will not be coming.”
