Liverpool was approached by Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur with an inquiry during the January transfer window.
Joe Gomez, now Liverpool’s longest-serving first-team player, has amassed over 200 appearances for the Reds in all competitions since his transfer from Charlton in the summer of 2015.
Despite not consistently being considered a first-choice player, the adaptable defender has made a significant impact on Liverpool’s 2023/24 season by filling in various defensive positions, including defensive midfield, amidst the ongoing injury crisis at Anfield.
According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham inquired about Gomez’s availability in January. With their defensive options depleted due to injuries to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, Spurs were seeking additional squad depth during the mid-season transfer window. However, the club ultimately signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa.
Although the specifics of Tottenham’s interest in Gomez are not provided in the Mail’s report, it can be presumed that the approach was promptly dismissed.
Gomez is Liverpool’s ‘life saver’
The individual, aged 26, has been instrumental in Liverpool’s performance this season, having participated in 37 matches across various competitions, marking it as the second-highest number of appearances in his professional career thus far.
Following Liverpool’s victory in the FA Cup fifth-round match against Southampton, during which the individual assumed the role of a holding midfielder, Jurgen Klopp, the team’s manager, specifically commended the player identified by the jersey number 2.
The manager said: “Joe Gomez saved our lives until now 20 times and the kids kept us in the competition. We can talk about the [academy] boys for the next four hours if you want but the real story today, besides the goals, is actually Joe Gomez.
“For the first time on that position, in the middle of the park with chaos around him because nothing was settled, I couldn’t respect it more.”
