Arsenal have been sensational in front of goal in recent weeks, defying critics who questioned their goalscoring ability earlier this season.
Arsenal have been rumored to sign a new striker in the summer, with Victor Osimhen among the possible targets. Mikel Arteta has been advised to bring in a prolific goalscorer to his squad.
However, Arsenal seem to be doing fine without a top-notch goalscorer, as they have netted 31 goals in their last seven league matches, setting a new Premier League record.
Their win over Sheffield United was historic for several reasons, and one of them was their scoring prowess. This is Arsenal’s best Premier League season ever in terms of goals at this point of the season.
Arsenal break club goalscoring record in the Premier League
Arsenal have scored 68 goals in 27 Premier League games. This is the highest number of goals they have ever scored at this point of any season in the league’s history.
The last time Arsenal won the title was in 2003-04, when they were unbeaten throughout the season. They had world-class strikers like Thierry Henry and Robert Pires, but they only scored 53 goals in their first 27 games.
Liverpool won the league title in 2019-20 with an incredible record of 26 wins and one draw in their first 27 matches. However, they still scored fewer goals than Arsenal, with 64.
Manchester City clinched the title on the last day of the 2021-22 season, after a close race with Liverpool. They also had 64 goals after 27 games.
Manchester United’s legendary team of 1998-99, who won the treble of league, FA Cup and Champions League, also scored less than Arsenal, with 62 goals in their first 27 matches.
The only Arsenal team that came close to this season’s goal tally was the one that followed the Invincibles, in 2004-05. They scored 63 goals in their first 27 games. All the other teams that won the league under Arsene Wenger had much lower totals.
Who has scored Arsenal’s Premier League goals?
Arsenal’s goal-scoring ability was doubted by many who wondered how they could compete without a prolific striker like Erling Haaland or Mohamed Salah. However, the team has shown that they can share the scoring burden among different players.
Bukayo Saka leads the way with 13 goals this season, followed by Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz who have seven each.
Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard have also contributed six goals apiece, while Eddie Nketiah and Declan Rice have added five each as England Internationals.
Gabriel Jesus is lagging behind with four goals, the same number as Gabriel Magalhaes, who has been a threat from set-pieces.
Arsenal do not depend on a single scorer to carry them through the season. This gives them an advantage in their quest to win the title.
